It\u2019s going to be summertime soon, when the living is easy \u2014 unless you have a pet who will be spending lots of time in the great outdoors. Spring and summer are the most popular (and prolific) seasons for\u00a0ticks<\/a>, especially this summer.<\/p>\n

\"Applying

\u201cTicks are dangerous,\u201d he adds. \u201cThey transmit much more than\u00a0Lyme disease<\/a>.\u201d In fact, some can emit as many as four or five pathogens, and cause infections in humans and pets. If a large number of ticks infest a pet, they can suck so much blood that your pet can become\u00a0anemic<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 a good reason to nip the prospect of ticks in the bud.<\/p>\n

Fortunately, there\u2019s preventive medicine that can protect your pet from picking them up in the first place, as well as foolproof techniques to remove them. But there are also popular myths out there that won\u2019t actually fix the problem. Read on for expert advice on what you should do when ticks attack.<\/p>\n

4 Common Tick Removal Myths<\/h2>\n

Petroleum jelly, burning them off, freezing them off, nail polish. These are just a few of the common folk remedies that pop up when you google tick removal. And all of them won\u2019t work \u2014 and have the potential to further hurt your pet.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese techniques are not viable options,\u201d says Dr. Alleman. \u201cThe problem is that I\u2019ve never seen a tick back out. Their head remains embedded in the animal\u2019s skin.\u201d And this is precisely the problem with petroleum jelly and nail polish: Pet owners think that they can drown or kill the tick, but the head stays in place.<\/p>\n

Then there\u2019s the burning method. Fact: Lighting a match anywhere near your pet is the very definition of playing with fire. \u201cThis should be common sense,\u201d says Sabrina Wehrhan, lead veterinary technician at St. James Animal Hospital in St. James, New York. \u201cThe dog has hair. The hair is going to go up in flames.\u201d<\/p>\n

She also recommends not toying with the idea of freezing ticks, which some owners try to do by using an aerosol-based liquid freezing gel. \u201cFor one, you\u2019re not a veterinary professional, so you won\u2019t know how long to hold it on,\u201d says Wehrhan. \u201cI\u2019ve seen people just spray and spray.\u201d<\/p>\n

The other myth Wehrhan has often heard: Once you successfully take a tick off, you can burn it. \u201cThe tick is actually toxic,\u201d she says, \u201cWhen it pops, it can let off a toxic fume that can be harmful to pets and infants.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Best Way to Remove a Tick<\/h2>\n

\u201cSimply pull them out using tweezers or a tick remover,\u201d says Dr. Alleman.<\/p>\n

The latter is a tool that\u2019s specially designed for safely and quickly removing ticks. \u201cThere are a couple of types,\u201d explains Dr. Alleman. \u201cOne functions as blunt-ended, plastic tweezers. The other I\u2019ve seen is called the\u00a0Tick Key<\/a>, a little gizmo that resembles a bottle opener. The hole in it comes down to a very thin point, so you can kind of slip the tick into this hole, slide the tick down to the end and basically lift \u2014 just like you would remove a cap off a bottle \u2014 and it pulls the tick out.\u201d<\/p>\n

Your technique is equally important: Start by parting your dog\u2019s fur where you see a tick, and then \u201cpull it out by the body, so as not to twist or pinch the head off,\u201d says Dr. Alleman.<\/p>\n

And be sure to take extra care if you\u2019re using a tick-removal aid, like tweezers. \u201cWith tweezers, you need to be careful that you don\u2019t squeeze the head and neck of the tick so hard that you break it,\u201d he says. Instead, apply enough pressure to grab the body right where the head and neck attach \u2014 and don\u2019t leave the head embedded.<\/p>\n

Once you\u2019ve removed a tick, there are a couple of ways to banish it for good. \u201cIf you just have a tick or two,\u201d says Dr. Alleman, \u201cI\u2019d put them on a piece of tape, so they can\u2019t move, and flush them down the toilet.\u201d<\/p>\n

Be warned: Flushing alone may not do the trick. \u201cYou don\u2019t want to flush a live tick down the toilet because they can crawl back up,\u201d explains Wehrhan.<\/p>\n

\u201cPutting them in rubbing alcohol will kill them,\u201d says Dr. Alleman, who suggests pouring a little alcohol into a bottle, dropping in the tick and then waiting five minutes until you\u2019re sure that the tick has met its match.<\/p>\n

Protect Your Pet Before You Have a Tick Problem<\/h2>\n

The best way to protect your pet from ticks is to apply a monthly\u00a0flea and tick preventative<\/a>. \u201cWe\u2019ve already seen flea and tick cases this year,\u201d says Wehrhan. \u201cWe recommend starting now.\u201d<\/p>\n

And since ticks require a little bit of geo-targeting, you\u2019ll want to consult with your vet first. \u201cThere are different tick products, and the first thing you need to recognize is that, depending on what kind of insecticides and repellents have been used in your area, some products may not work as well as others,\u201d says Dr. Alleman. \u201cInsects do develop resistance.\u201d<\/p>\n

Not all tick preventers are created equal, either. \u201cWe don\u2019t recommend flea and tick collars because they\u2019re localized around the neck,\u201d says Wehrhan. Since fleas and ticks tend to latch on near the neck, the rump and in the crooks of a dog\u2019s legs, most collars won\u2019t provide total coverage.<\/p>\n

So how do you know if your pet requires professional care? According to Dr. Alleman, there are a few signs to watch for: \u201cI don\u2019t want to say that you need to bring your dog in because you found a single tick on your animal, but if you notice a large red ring developing \u2014 regardless of whether there are 1 or 100 ticks \u2014 that\u2019s evidence of the migration of pathogens, and a good sign that prophylactic treatment will be effective.\u201d<\/p>\n

The second red flag is the actual tick count: A lone tick isn\u2019t reason enough for a visit. However, \u201cany dog who has a lot of ticks needs to seek prompt professional attention,\u201d says Dr. Alleman.<\/p>\n

Bottom line: Seek out preventive care, and give your dog (along with yourself and any kids in your home) a thorough going-over on a daily basis to help ensure a carefree \u2014 and tick-free \u2014 summer.<\/p>\n
